'Fairy companion'

In Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link was designed with a strong inspiration from Peter Pan, starting with his appearance: a boy wearing a green robe and hat, always accompanied by a fairy. He is supposedly a kokiri: forest creatures who always maintain the appearance and mindset of children, whose 'coming of age' happens when a fairy, of her own free will, arrives with each one and remains their companion. Link is the only one not yet visited by a fairy, and gets mocked because of it; then, sent by the Deku Tree, the fairy Navi goes in search of him. Their adventure together begins...

In the end, Link goes back in time and undoes everything, to save everyone; but then no one, not even Zelda, knows who he is and what he did. The only one who truly knows him at that moment is who always remained by his side: his fairy, Navi...

Then, without saying a word, Navi abandons him. She only joined him to fulfill the mission commaded by Deku Tree. He's not a Kokiri, and now that he knows it, he can't return to his old life: he has to grow up...

Link is left alone, aimless, and silently leaves to the tolling of the bells.

"It is as if long after writing Peter Pan its true meaning came to me: desperate attempt to grow up but can’t." —James M. Barrie (Notebook 40, 1922)
